Ianthe returned to the ranch, and chatted with Mallory again about the conflicts in her schedule. Both the party and the drum circle were important. There must be a way to give them both equal time.

“It’ll be fine,” she said. “You’ve got lots of acreage here. Put them on the one side of the ranch and the children can go on the other.”

Mallory shook her head and Ianthe listed off reasons to quell her doubt.

Mallory consulted her electronic schedule. “What about Saturday?”

“Can’t. Everything’s set for Friday night.”

“Oh, right. Caterers. Shoot!” Mallory went back to her schedule.

Ianthe glanced toward the barn door, antsy. She longed to see Briak again. When she did, she’d say, “come back to my apartment”, just as she should’ve this—

“Earth to Ianthe,” Mallory’s voice drew her attention. “You zoned out for a moment.”

“Did I?”

“I asked about the time. Can you come an hour later?”

“Maybe…”

Mallory laughed. “He’ll be here, I promise.”

Ianthe blinked. “Who?”

“Briak. You were daydreaming about him, weren’t you?”

“No,” she scoffed. “No. Why would you think that?”

Mallory shooed away another ranch hand and leaned against the nearest stall, petting the tan-colored mare that extended her head for a scratch. “I saw how you two acted this morning. What’s going on there?”

“I don’t know.” She shook her head. “We keep running into each other. We went to lunch this afternoon.”

“You had a date?” Mallory bounced on her toes with excitement. “Right on, Ianthe! Tell me everything!”

Ianthe spewed out every detail save for leaving out the part about how she’d revealed herself to Briak. Now that she thought about it, wasn’t he less than shocked? Why was that? She brought the scene up in her mind but kept sticking on their kiss. She groaned and dropped her head into her hands. “And then he just brought me back to work.”

“Because you asked. Sounds like he was acting like a gentleman to your lady.” Mallory shrugged. “Me, I’d take him home.”

“You’re married,” Ianthe pointed out, the smell of wheat grains tickling her nose.

“You’re not,” Mallory reminded her. “And if I were you, screw being a lady! I’d be all over him.” She wrinkled her nose as she smiled. “Seems to me he’s doing everything he can to encourage it.”

“I know!” Ianthe squealed. “But he shouldn’t. It’s never going to work.”

“Why the hell not?” Mallory demanded.

“Me and Briak, we’re—” She clamped her mouth shut. “You don’t understand. A love like that would never work. I’m not an insta-lust kinda girl.”

“Given the right guy, who said anything about lust?”

Ianthe didn’t want to discuss this, least of all with a human. She’d involved herself too deeply with these humans. If she weren’t careful, Briak would talk her into relinquishing her wand in exchange for his engagement ring. Didn’t stories like that just not end well? “Why don’t you make your marriage work?”

Mallory deflated and stared across the barn at little Ann, reaching up over a stall door to offer a pony a handful of grain. “It’s not that simple. You at least have a chance with Briak.
